Dopplr, the “social networking” site used by frequent travelers, was recently funded by a wide range of superstar investors (read: Martin Varsavsky (FON), Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn, PayPal), Saul Klein (Index Ventures, The Accelerator Group - Stardoll, Joost, Last.fm) and so on).
I frequently used Dopplr when I was in Europe due to all the traveling but hardly use it these days. Dopplr’s blog did not mention the amount they received. They’re still invite-only but ping me if you’d like one.
“We’re gratified that so many world travellers have already found value in Dopplr,” said Lisa Sounio, CEO of Dopplr. “Having this international group of active Dopplr users now joining us as strategic investors is tremendously exciting. Martin, Saul, Joichi and Reid have a great sense of business, technology, design and travel.”
Moral of the story: If a potential group of investors is already using your service with(out) you knowing it, life is set. This service will never be a global hit, but may be able to sustain itself due to the very fact that there are some people who are internet savvy and travel alot.
Greenspan, used to be the world’s most powerful man, previous chairman of the federal reserve, appeared on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to speak about his latest book. Stewart brought up some common misinterpretations of the layman towards the fed and what they do. Enjoy the video below.
If given the opportunity to conduct a last lecture of your life, what and how would it be? For Randy Pausch, a comp science professor from Carnegie Mellon, it’s about drawing on the wall when you’re a kid. Prof Randy was diagnosed with cancer and this indeed was one of his last few lectures. Truly inspiring…
Eric Wahlforss, Adam Wern together with some folks created it in 24 hours. Now it’s done in 10.5 hours. Feedjit is the first online start-up which was made under 24 hours that I have heard of. It’s a widget that shows incoming and outgoing traffic. See how it was done here. You guys know any more under 24 hour internet companies? Do comment if you do.
Yujun, Beng Han and I have been extremely busy lately with this competition. It’s organised by the University of Karlsruhre and sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton and BASF.
Anyways, the business case study is extremely interesting and absorbing. Have a look at it: bm_2007_pre_case.pdf
